DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION IS OPEN NOW! \nA 48-hour film festival hosted at Movie Madness \nHave you ever dreamed of making a movie that ends up on the shelves of one of the world’s biggest video stores? Then join us for DIRECT TO VIDEO\, a unique 48-hour film festival hosted by Movie Madness\, Portland’s legendary independent video store! \nParticipating teams will have 48 hours (August 15th-17th) to produce an original short film featuring a secret prompt. All films that hit the deadline will be compiled on the DIRECT TO VIDEO DVD COMPILATION and added to Movie Madness’s legendary collection. Films will also be screened on August 23rd at the Movie Madness Miniplex. \n\nFilms must feature a prompt and prop that will be revealed at the festival kickoff party on August 15th at 6:00pm at Movie Madness. Completed film submissions must be received by Sunday\, August 17th at 7pm. All genres are welcome.\n\n\nPrizes include a free Miniplex rental\, Movie Madness gift cards and merch\, Hollywood Theatre movie passes\, and our coveted golden VHS trophy.\n\n\nRegistration is open July 15th – August 12th\, or until we hit our 20-team limit. The application fee is $35 per team.\n\n\nQuestions? Email filmfest@moviemadness.org.\n\nRules & Terms \nAt least one member of each team must be physically present for the kickoff event on August 15th at 6:00pm at Movie Madness. No remote accommodations will be available. \nFilms must be 4-6 minutes long and include the prompt that is revealed at our kickoff event. All films must be written\, shot\, and edited during the designated 48 hours of the competition. \nNo filming permitted in Movie Madness. \nFilms must be at R-rating or below. No hate speech\, no sexual assault\, no gratuitous nudity\, no (real) poop or bodily fluid. \nFilms must be entirely original. If a submission includes copyrighted material\, we will not accept it. \nAll footage must be shot during the official 48 hour period. No stock footage may be used on the piece. \nIf a team fails to hit the Sunday\, August 17th\, 7:00pm deadline for any reason\, the film will not be accepted and the entry fee will not be refunded. If a team withdraws from participation for any reason\, the entry fee will not be refunded. \nEmployees of Film Action Oregon are prohibited from participating in this festival. \nWe reserve the right to reject any submission for any reason. If a submission is rejected for a violation of the stated rules\, the entry fee will not be refunded. \nThe filmmaker/film submitter agrees that: \nAn exhibition-quality** digital file is required to be submitted by Sunday\, August 17th\, 2025 at 7:00pm PST. \nLate submissions will not be accepted and festival application fees will not be refunded. \nThe submitted film will be added to the Direct to Video compilation that is made available to rent for free at Movie Madness. Additional copies for teams will not be provided. Movie Madness may exercise the right to sell this compilation after the festival. \nFilms submitted for consideration must have previously obtained all legal copyright clearances\, licenses\, and permissions for materials contained within the films (picture and audio). DESCRIPTION:Our First Friday Artist Spotlight returns with a gallery popup by local artist Tom Skelly! \nTom Skelly is a Portland visual artist and radio show host for The Sound of Pictures movie music\nand soundtrack show at XRAY.FM. He continually finds wonder in the power of facial\nexpressions embedded in psychological ambience. They are intertwined through non-verbal\ncommunication and body language. \nThe paintings in this exhibition are derived from freeze framed movie stills that carry his\nmessage. The short videos are mostly made as promos for his radio shows.\nThe Sound of Pictures airs on-demand and streaming at XRAY.FM\, and on the radio at 107.1 &\n91.1fm. DESCRIPTION:MOSMA\, the Museum of Stop Motion Animation would like to meet the public\, cinephiles and animation fans! On display\, we will have beautifully crafted puppets by local fabricator Katy Strutz and the wonderful cabin set from the locally produced\, stop-motion short The Tin Woods by Nick Boxwell and Mattzilla Duron. Fabricator Suzanne Moulton and other stop-motion professionals will be present to answer any questions you may have\, from miniature costuming\, puppet building\, to scenic and prop painting. There will also be MOSMA t-shirts and stickers for sale. Our mission is to establish a permanent museum in Portland and we’d love to tell you all about it! \nMOSMA\, The Museum of Stop Motion Animation is a nonprofit organization that was founded\nby Brian Capati in 2022. Capati has been working in the stop-motion industry for two decades\nand recognized the need for a stop-motion museum in Portland\, Oregon. During his time\nworking on the Oscar award winning film\, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio at ShadowMachine in\nNorthwest Portland\, there were two other stop-motion animated features being shot\nsimultaneously in Portland; Henry Selick’s Wendell & Wild and LAIKA’s Wildwood. This was\nhistorical\, in that several stop-motion feature films were being produced in one city at the same\ntime. Portland had already been recognized for stop-motion through the work of Will Vinton\nStudios from 1975 to 2002. From the Academy Award winning short\, Closed Mondays\, to the\nCalifornia Raisins and The PJs\, Portland had begun to solidify its place on the map as the\nepicenter of stop-motion. \nOver the years the stop-motion community has grown significantly in Portland and globally.\nThough it is growing\, there has never been a centralized platform of support anywhere in the\nworld. The Museum of Stop Motion Animation will be a resource for education\, preservation and\nthe celebration of a remarkable\, beloved art form. The history of stop-motion dates back to the\nadvent of film making and special effects as the industry continues to be a significant purveyor\nof tactile arts and technological advances. Join us for a gallery of original art\, animation cels and stop motion figures from local artist David Torres who’s new film\, THE EDENSPHERE SAGA\, recently premiered at Hollywood Theatre. \n6:00pm – 7:00pm: Gallery open \n7:00pm: Screening of David’s short film “TO YOU\, MY IMMORTAL FLAME” \nSeating for the screening will be limited\, we recommend reserving a ticket in advance by calling the store\, or asking the counter. \nBorn in West Palm Beach\, FL\, David Torres is an Portland based artist known for his unique fusion of stop-motion\, hand-drawn animation\, and live action. David is interested in the history of stories where the unseen forces of morality are at work. The PTSD factor embedded in culture has drawn David’s work to the idea of the “hero” as an empathic ideal for people to aspire to. As a way of investigating this idea David created “Sunkeepers”\, a cinematic universe\, designed under the influences of 1990’s anime\, video games\, and his father’s middle school drawings. Through Sunkeepers\, David tells stories within the fictional planet of “Runetech” about a way of being and existing in our world. DESCRIPTION:Join Movie Madness at Portland’s premiere classic arcade and bar\, GROUND KONTROL\, on Halloween night! \n  \nGiga-Fright is back this Halloween for a night of ghoulish games\, spooky surprises\, and of course Portland’s favorite costume contest! Slither out to the arcade for Free Play on all of our games all day and stay for the costume contest at 9pm with cash and bonus prizes! \n  \nMovie Madness will be donating merchandise and gift cards as prizes for the leaderboard pinball tournaments as well as the costume contest. \nThe 1st place winner of the costume contest will receive a free private rental in the Movie Madness Miniplex! \nWe will be joined by GIGANTIC BREWING for a full tap takeover of the bar featuring the Movie Madness Psychotronic Pale Ale. \n  \nDoors open at noon to allow all ages access to Free Play until 5pm\, and then the 21+ only party kicks off at 5pm with happy hour until 7pm\, and judging for the costume contest beginning at 9pm. $12 cover includes Free Play! \n  \nNote about costumes: Please keep in mind that you’ll need to temporarily remove masks to be ID’d at the door and served at the bar. If you’re planning on wearing face paint\, please make sure that you remain recognizable to our staff.
