DESCRIPTION:The Movie Madness Artist Spotlight returns on Friday\, January 9th with the talent behind our store map mural\, Greg Bigoni! \nGreg Bigoni is a lifelong Portlander and freelance artist\, and can be held personally responsible for a number of flyers\, stickers\, posters\, cards\, T-shirts\, and tattoos around the Pacific Northwest\, including the giant mural near the Movie Madness entrance which depicts over 350 films. The ‘Filmed In Oregon’ exhibit is film-based as well\, but in a much more specific way. The goal is more than capturing moments from the screen\, but widening the lens to also commemorate local history\, scenery\, architecture\, and community throughout many decades.

DESCRIPTION:Our First Friday Artist Spotlight returns with a gallery popup by local artist Adrian Poole! \nArtist Bio:\nMy name is Adrian Poole and I am from Newark\, Delaware. I grew up reading Mad Magazine and watching old horror films\, which influenced my visual style. After studying art in Boston and moving to Portland in 2015\, I became interested in collecting video tapes\, starting with the purchase of Rawhead Rex. One afternoon I decided to paint the demon poodle from the VHS cover for The Boneyard. This led to more illustrations of genre films released during the video store era. Then join us for DIRECT TO VIDEO\, a unique 48-hour film festival hosted by Movie Madness\, Portland’s legendary independent video store! \nParticipating teams will have 48 hours (August 15th-17th) to produce an original short film featuring a secret prompt. All films that hit the deadline will be compiled on the DIRECT TO VIDEO DVD COMPILATION and added to Movie Madness’s legendary collection. Films will also be screened on August 23rd at the Movie Madness Miniplex. \n\nFilms must feature a prompt and prop that will be revealed at the festival kickoff party on August 15th at 6:00pm at Movie Madness. Completed film submissions must be received by Sunday\, August 17th at 7pm. All genres are welcome.\n\n\nPrizes include a free Miniplex rental\, Movie Madness gift cards and merch\, Hollywood Theatre movie passes\, and our coveted golden VHS trophy.\n\n\nRegistration is open July 15th – August 12th\, or until we hit our 20-team limit. The application fee is $35 per team.\n\n\nQuestions? He continually finds wonder in the power of facial\nexpressions embedded in psychological ambience. They are intertwined through non-verbal\ncommunication and body language. \nThe paintings in this exhibition are derived from freeze framed movie stills that carry his\nmessage. Our mission is to establish a permanent museum in Portland and we’d love to tell you all about it! \nMOSMA\, The Museum of Stop Motion Animation is a nonprofit organization that was founded\nby Brian Capati in 2022. Capati has been working in the stop-motion industry for two decades\nand recognized the need for a stop-motion museum in Portland\, Oregon. During his time\nworking on the Oscar award winning film\, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio at ShadowMachine in\nNorthwest Portland\, there were two other stop-motion animated features being shot\nsimultaneously in Portland; Henry Selick’s Wendell & Wild and LAIKA’s Wildwood. This was\nhistorical\, in that several stop-motion feature films were being produced in one city at the same\ntime. Portland had already been recognized for stop-motion through the work of Will Vinton\nStudios from 1975 to 2002. From the Academy Award winning short\, Closed Mondays\, to the\nCalifornia Raisins and The PJs\, Portland had begun to solidify its place on the map as the\nepicenter of stop-motion. \nOver the years the stop-motion community has grown significantly in Portland and globally.\nThough it is growing\, there has never been a centralized platform of support anywhere in the\nworld. The Museum of Stop Motion Animation will be a resource for education\, preservation and\nthe celebration of a remarkable\, beloved art form. The history of stop-motion dates back to the\nadvent of film making and special effects as the industry continues to be a significant purveyor\nof tactile arts and technological advances.
